Trends are very important if you want to be on track in the online world. Naturally, all bloggers need to keep up with the latest trends to get that mainstream juice they need. Blog design has always been an important factor that can determine the success of a certain blog.
An important design element in blogs includes the font choice. Fonts are a big part of blogs as most have a lot of text and need to be appealing to readers and bring something fresh to the table. Design is one of the areas where there will always be new trends that change periodically, as there is no design that is simply the best.
Tastes and culture change, and the perception of design along with it. This is why it is important to keep up with those trends, including the latest font and typography preferences. Here are the five most widely adopted font trends 2018.
Serif Fonts
Minimalism has finally reached its peak and the time has come for a shift to be made again. This change has manifested itself in a specific way; the return of the serif font. The time has come to give our blogs more character, depth, and warmth. Blogs are more focused on great storytelling, emotions and creating strong connections with readers, and with serif fonts you can achieve this while outlining sophistication and honesty.
Depending on the design and nature of your blog you can use serif font and combine it with other font styles such sans to bring a more serious, practical, and business tone. However, if your blog is more focused on lifestyle and leisure, it is probably a better idea to use dual serif that will make the readers feel cozier.
Bold Handwritten Fonts

Given the fact that it’s becoming more and more difficult to brand your blog and yourself as a blogger, handwritten fonts are coming back strong. We are already seeing many blogs slowly introducing handwritten fonts to their audiences through titles, headings, subheadings, quotes, and so on.
However, it’s becoming obvious that such fonts will be more common as time passes by. Yet another opposite of minimalism is the introduction of big, bolded layouts in combination with handwriting. The big whitespace is still preserved but only now you can find big bolded headings, with handwritten elements underneath to complement them.
Helvetica and its spin-offs

Helvetica is evergreen font type in the blogging world. It has always been used and still remains very popular. However, there are many variations of Helvetica now and blogs are looking to stir things up a bit.
Although the old elements still remain, there are new, freshly added elements that bring youth to the old go-to font. There are also people that think that Helvetica shouldn’t be changed and that it will be ruined with new styles.
No matter what your point of view is on this topic, Helvetica still remains one of the most reliable blogging tools. This typeface is the most popular font with all designers and this is because it’s simply good and looks appealing to everyone. Missing out on it would be a big mistake.
Geometric Fonts

These typefaces bring something completely fresh to the table and this is noticeable at first sight. This is why Geometric typefaces have been growing in popularity ever since they emerged a year ago. These letterforms don’t have filigrees or serifs. They are designed with the combination of clean geometrically perfect circles and straight lines.
They have a really modern look and can be used for branding. At the same time, they have a good implementation for tech and science blogs, as they look futuristic. Still, there are many options for these fonts because they are sophisticated and, with a bit of work in color and details, they could be used in any kind of blog.

Variable Fonts

Technology has always been an important factor in design. People appreciate technology and innovation more than ever and this is why you need to give them these things. Google, Microsoft, Adobe and Apple have worked together on creating a font format called OpenType. They named this format variable fonts and everyone that sees it for the first time is simply blown away.
This technology can be used for any type of font and instead of being traditionally static, these fonts gain and lose weight. They are constantly moving and have different types of transformations. With these fonts, any blog can catch a reader’s attention and make them say “how cool is that?!”
Conclusion
These five font trends should be your bread and butter during this year and probably in 2019 as well. It’s OK to be original and you should always try to do this, but through current trends and visuals that people want to see. This is how your blog will always look exciting and inspire people.
