“Behind a good poster should be a message or idea,” says Jesús Prudencio, the illustrator/designer behind the fantastic Cars and Films series of posters.

It must communicate to people and must reach out to everyone. One of his passions was movies, and he explains, “I like to follow the trends, but do not usually apply them to my designs I like minimalist design and simple lines. I try to convey what I want with few elements that make an impact and convey a lasting message.”

So when you are designing a poster try to think about your different ideas, and go with the one that has a personal impact as well as a resonance with the wider audience. So it will not only be appealing to designers, but also will be appealing to fans through the focus of the project.

Be consistent with details

Consistency of detail is a key to a great poster design, says the Prudencio. Furthermore he adds: “While designing a poster I chose the same fonts for the titles of all the series for consistency, and I used contrasting fonts for the detailed information accompanying the car.

The background color is as important as the font, he says. The background color he chose was based on what he felt the film would symbolize and what would combine well with other key elements.

He is renowned for his incredible use of color and composition and his straight photo montage work, but can turn his creative hand to just about anything.

“Ever since I’d discovered the font Graphic, I wanted to use it and this was the right opportunity,” said Radim. “Graphic possesses a beautiful combination of boldness and elegance.

“To illustrate the contrast, I used SF Movie Poster [a free font from dafont.com] for the super condensed font. Then it was a question of mixing the two fonts to find the right result.”

In your own design, you can playful but consider what the message is and ensure the fonts are complementary. Read our article on balancing text with visual elements.

Spend a day with your work

Once you think you’ve finished your poster design, step away from it and focus on something else. When you go back to your design later and you will see it in a new light. Many designers suggest that you must spend an extra day with the work you’ve done, especially when you create both image and type, such as in a poster. It is essential to do this for any design not just a poster, and do not forget ask your peers as well, their feedback can be very helpful in determining the overall impact of the work.

Say More With Less

Sometimes a single word or a dramatic image can communicate so much more than multiples or combinations. Less is more. Do not add extra graphics or words just for the sake of adding more.

Posters with fewer words and images are often more appealing and eye-catching for customers. It’s the cleaner, clearer, more punchy designs that people will be drawn to read first, and in an age when people rarely have time to stop to engage, capturing them in that fleeting moment in crucial.
